City Market and the Intervale Center have teamed up to create an exploratory series called The Dish. With support from ArtsRiot, we host quarterly panel discussions that dive into hot food issues with the help of local experts.

 

Tackling the topic of food access

Our latest Dish panel discussion tackled the tough question of food access in Vermont and explored innovative programs and solutions for increasing food access for Vermonters.  When planning for this Dish discussion, we tried to keep in mind that food access is a huge, complicated subject, and that it would take many Dish discussions to fully explore all the different aspects of this topic.  So, we narrowed it down to focus specifically on the relationship between the local food system and food access in Vermont.  Just because something is local, does that make it more accessible? “Local” is a popular buzzword in our food system, but even if food is grown locally, does that mean it’s more accessible? According to US Census data, 13% of Vermont households are food insecure, meaning they don’t have access to enough food to meet basic needs at all times.  While creating economic opportunities for Vermont farmers and food producers has been a major goal within our state, the development of the local food system hasn’t necessarily made food more affordable for people experiencing food insecurity.  We’ll explore this multifaceted issue and discuss innovative approaches during a lively panel discussion with local food producers and representatives from organizations focused on alleviating food insecurity in Vermont.

Meet Our Moderator

Alison Nihart is the Assistant for the Food Systems Initiative – UVM’s university-wide transdisciplinary initiative to promote food systems research, education, and outreach. Alison graduated from UVM in 2012 with a master’s in Natural Resources. Her thesis research project looked at urban agriculture policy in Burlington, VT.

In her free time, she serves as Facilitator for the Burlington Food Council and can be found wandering around local farmers' markets.
