January 17 marks the Old Twelfth Night on the Julian calendar and has celebratory associations in many European cultures. In Medieval England, this date marked a celebratory day of “wassailing” – drinking a hot mulled cider and singing carols to ensure good apple harvests in the orchards the following year. To celebrate the Old Twelfth Night, Jane O’Connor from Champlain Orchards and Meredith Knowles of City Market will lead a cooking class to make a Cider Cheddar Soup, Savory Apple Turnovers, and our own Wassail drink while learning about Old World lore.
