Gado Gado (Indonesian Peanut Sauce with Fresh Salad)

  This sweet and slightly spicy sauce is delicious spooned over a fresh summer salad. Arrange the salad ingredients on a large platter and have each person help themselves and add the sauce to their plate.

  Ingredients
1 clove garlic
            
                                          1 shallot
            
                                          1⁄4 teaspoon salt
            
                                          1⁄2 teaspoon chili powder
            
                                          1 tablespoon brown sugar
            
                                          1 tablespoon soy sauce
            
                                          1 cup water
            
                                          1 1⁄3 cups peanuts
            
                                          1 lemon
            
            Instructions
	Combine all the ingredients in a blender and pulse well. Adjust seasoning as desired. Makes 2 cups (refrigerate any extra and use as a dip or add more water for a salad dressing; will keep for up to 1 week).
	 
	For the salad, arrange any combination of the following on a serving platter (potatoes and hard-boiled eggs are a traditional part of the salad):
	 
- 2-3 boiled potatoes, cut into quarters
- 4 hard boiled eggs, cut in half
- steamed green beans
- steamed broccoli
- raw or steamed zucchini
- fresh sliced cucumber
- fresh sliced tomatoes
- fresh sliced radishes
- lettuce
Notes
For a whole meal, serve with fried local tempeh and rice.
