Beer and Wine January Newsletter: Local Spotlight

In 1995, Jason MacArthur spent half a year in Southern France, learning to make wine. Upon his return to the Green Mountain State, he wondered what he could produce at home that would express the terroir of Vermont like Grenache does for the Cote du Rhone. It was quickly appearant that cider would be it. 5 years later, he and his wife Lauren, started Whetstone Ciderworks on their farm, which hosts the Whetstone Brook.

They source their apples locally from Scott Farm in Dummerston, and Poverty Lane Orchards in Lebanon, NH, and their ciders are quite dry and complex. The Orchard King is bottle conditioned, with great notes of minerality and a slight citrus character to it. The Orchard Queen is full-bodied, with a tad of sweetness, and is earthy and effervescent.
