Learn how to make homemade fruit syrups and delicious ways to use them (like sodas and snow cones) with John and Nancy Hayden from The Farm Between. They grow their own organic fruit on their farm in Jeffersonville and sell delicious fruit syrups at the Burlington Farmers' Market including black currant, elderberry/ginger, strawberry/rhubarb, and raspberry apple cider. When not farming or making syrup for the farmer's market, John travels to Haiti to help develop land for organic food production.

Come give our bike-powered smoothie maker a whirl as you blend your own smoothie with yogurt, fruit, and maple syrup! Learn how to shop for fresh, long-lasting, and nutritious foods in Produce and Bulk. With this interactive and hands-on tour, we’ll explore the Produce and Bulk departments, learning a simple method for finding the best value on fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans by paying attention to the price per pound. You’ll learn tips for selecting and storing these foods at home to get the longest use out of them, develop a better understanding of Co-op sales, and get inspiring recipes to start cooking quick and affordable meals at home.

Do you love the taste of fresh mozzarella with tomatoes and basil? Dairy farmer Lindsay Harris from Family Cow Farmstand in Hinesburg teaches us how simple it is to make mozzarella cheese in our home kitchens. Family Cow Farmstand is the first certified raw milk dairy in Vermont.

Learn how to make refreshing homemade sodas using soda cultures that are fizzy, fun, and good for you. From fresh berries to lemons to herbs and more, the sky is the limit for summer flavors. Participants will bring a “ginger bug” culture home to get started on their own soda adventures. Jason Frishman heads up the vegetarian FolkFoods stand at the Burlington summer farmer’s market and enjoys teaching about fermentation year-round.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the overall health of your heart. This lecture will explore some of the causes of heart disease, teach us how to monitor our heart’s health, and provide a series of diet and exercise plans that will reduce the risk of heart disease. Greg Giasson runs Alternative Roots Wellness Center in Essex Junction where he offers holistic chiropractic and nutrition counseling services to help people get their health back into their own hands.

Discover the joys of baking sourdough breads! In this class, we’ll learn how versatile (and forgiving) sourdough starter is and how it can be put to work in favorite bread recipes (or even pastries!). We will see the different stages of a starter, learn when it's ready to use, and taste several varieties of freshly-baked sourdough breads. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions, and every participant will go home with a starter culture.

Start making kombucha at home! Kombucha is a fermentation of sweetened tea. In this class we’ll learn how to make it and also discuss why fermented foods are so beneficial. Please bring a wide-mouth half-gallon Mason jar (or even a quart-size yogurt container) with a lid so that you can take home a “scoby” (a starter culture) and get started. This class will be led by Suzanna Bliss, clinical herbalist, nutritionist, and founder of Rooted Wisdom in Middlesex.

Join Hugo Lara in a class on making Peruvian small plates that are perfect for summer parties and potlucks. He will show us how to make Causa and Papa a la Huancaina. Both of these dishes highlight the simple but flavorful potato, a Peruvian staple with over 4,000 varieties found in the country. Causa is a whipped potato cake infused with lime and yellow pepper flecks and beautifully layered with chicken or tuna. Papa a la Huancaina is a classic small plate that envelopes potatoes in a rich, creamy yellow pepper sauce made with queso fresco.

The Frugal Fridge tour complements the Pennywise Pantry shopping tour. This tour focuses on how to shop for healthy, affordable foods once you leave Produce and Bulk and enter the grocery aisles and perishables coolers. We’ll learn to become savvy label readers as we shop for nourishing, long-lasting foods that contain 5 ingredients or fewer. Have fun turning packages over to look at labels and compare prices across similar products.

City Market and Urban Moonshine partner to present an urban herb walk with herbalist Guido Masé. Come take a guided walk through Burlington, learning to identify common medicinal plants pushing their way through the cracks in the sidewalks, filling the lawns in our parks, and lining the streets of our city. Guido Masé RH(AHG) is the chief herbalist on staff at Urban Moonshine and a co-founder and director of the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism where he helps folks discover and use the plants that might be missing from their lives.

Make healthy and energizing snacks at home to take along on all your summer adventures and escape the GORP rut! Join Adele Dienno and Carlie Geer, RD, CD for this fun and tasty session. Whether you’re 6, 16, or 60, you’ll love these homemade gluten-free cookies, miniature muffins, and nut and dried fruit energy bars that travel well and taste great! Adele is a home chef and cooking instructor specializing in simple, fun, crowd pleasing cooking.

In Bhutan, where the growing season is short, fresh vegetables are pickled to eat alongside staple foods like rice and dal. Sisters Devi and Bhagawati Gurung will show us how they prepare Bhutanese pickles like cucumbers and carrots and serve them with chilies and yogurt as enhancements to a meal. As a special treat, they will also prepare a food beloved by children in Nepal called sel roti, which is a thin, sweetened dough that is fried in ring shapes until golden and crunchy.
