City Market’s Board of Directors created a General Manager Search Committee this winter upon receiving the news that General Manager, Pat Burns, would retire as of June 30. With assistance from Frank Sadowski of Gallagher Flynn Human Resource Services and Michael Healy of CDS Consulting Co-op, the Board Search Committee was able to interview a number of highly qualified applicants. They finalized their decision to hire John Tashiro last week; John will work with Pat throughout the month of June and the transition will be final as of July 1, 2015.

Mr. Tashiro most recently served as the Operating Director and Interim CEO of 1% for the Planet, an environmental non-profit based in Burlington. Rachel Jolly, Chair of the Board’s Search Committee, shares that, “The Board is extremely grateful for Pat Burns’s leadership over his seven years with the Co-op and his assistance with this important transition. John comes to the Co-op with over 20 years of experience in management, operations, marketing, fundraising, and cultivating partnerships. As we create the next chapter in our Co-op’s future, we’re excited to bring a General Manager on board that will step into this important leadership position with a depth and breadth of experience to facilitate staff, Member and community engagement and cooperative growth.”

As one of the largest single-store food co-ops in the United States, with over $38 million in sales, this is an important transition for the 43-year old City Market as it works to grow into a second store in the South End of Burlington. Throughout the summer, City Market will be holding town hall-style meetings for staff, Members and the community to engage with John. Community members are encouraged to introduce themselves to the Co-op’s new General Manager throughout this transition and share feedback along the way.
