Yield

16 Servings

Ingredients

1⁄2 cup butter
3 ounces chocolate, unsweetened
2⁄3 cup maple syrup
1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg
1⁄4 cup flour, whole wheat pastry
1⁄4 cup flour, all-purpose
1⁄2 cup walnuts

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Butter an 8- or 9-inch square baking pan.

In a large heavy pot, melt the butter and chocolate together, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Add the maple syrup and vanilla and beat with a whisk or electric mixer. Add the eggs (just crack directly into the pot if using an electric mixer, or lightly beat in a small bowl with a fork and then add to pot if mixing by hand). Stir in the flours and nut, and mix until batter is blended and smooth.

Pour into the prepared pan and bake for about 20 minutes, until brownies are just beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan and are fudgy in the center. If you like cakelike brownies, bake an extra 5 minutes.
