
The Co-op hosted our 4th Annual Mow Down Pollution Lawn Mower Exchange & Sale on April 24, 2010. To add to the environmental awareness that surrounds Earth Day, there were various recycling opportunities during the week.
Through our partnership with Vermont-based Neuton Mowers, we encourage community members to bring in their gas-powered, air-polluting mowers and receive a discount of over $100 off the retail price on Neuton electric mowers during the Mow Down Pollution event. Both the 14-inch and 19-inch mowers were available at the discounted price. Various accessories to the mowers were available at 30% off the retail price for that day only.

Recycle Your Old Eyeglasses

Throughout the year, Lions Club members collect used eyeglasses and volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact.
Recycle Your Old Cell Phones

A program called Hope Phones distributes donated cell phones to isolated villages around the globe where access to medical care is hours, if not days away. Medical personnel can then be alerted and bring their services to the sick who are too ill to travel.
Used CFL (Compact Fluorescent Bulb) Collection

Bring your used, unbroken CFLs to City Market on Earth Day and we will properly dispose of them for you! (It is illegal to dispose of mercury-containing light bulbs in the trash (under Vermont State Law, as of July 2007). For broken Bulbs, follow the clean up instructions at this link: http://www.cswd.net/whattodo/fluorescent_bulbs.shtml and bring the bulb and the remaining debris (contained in a plastic bag) to one of the CSWD facilities. City Market cannot accept broken bulbs.
Solar Made Simple Public Seminar

City Market and groSolar team up to present a free educational overview of the workings of solar power, including how to use state grants and federal tax credits to help pay for a system, as well as guidelines for assessing whether your home or business is right for solar. Bring your recent utility bill and pictures of your roof if you would like to discuss your home in more detail with a groSolar representative. Free and open to the public.
Recycle Your Gently Worn Jeans

Donated jeans will be sent for textile recycling by Goodwill. Women’s jeans will be collected for The Clothes Exchange: A Benefit for King Street Center.
