Orvieto is a wine region in Italy that is most often associated with a dry style of white wine here in the United States. Orvieto and Orvieto Classico are primarily Trebbiano and Grechetto blends, but may also include Malvasia, Verdello, and Canaiolo bianco.

Two of our favorite Orvieto wines are Ruffino Orvietto Classico and Badia Corti Orvietto. Ruffino has citrus, golden apple, floral and sage aromas with crisp apple, almond and minerals on the palate. Badia Corti is a bit richer in style, while still maintaining a bright, fresh taste. Light and clean, these wines are refreshing summer sippers that pair well with a wide variety of cheeses, cold salads, antipasti, or grilled fish.

The Great American Wine Company is a new brand from Rosenblum Cellars. The Great American Wine Company Red Blend is juicy and bold. Ripe red cherry, black cherry, black raspberry, vanilla and baking spice aromas continue through the palate. Rich and velvety with soft tannins, this Zinfandel blend is a BBQ friendly crowd pleaser!

The Great American Wine Company Chardonnay is a made in the classic California style. Clean, bright citrus and stone fruit aromas have inviting vanilla notes. Soft white peach and apple pie flavors are balanced by citrusy acidity. This is a full bodied white that holds up to grilled foods.

Rosé season is finally here!

Domaine Bousquet is a new favorite of ours, made from organic grapes sourced mainly from vineyards in Tupungato, Mendoza. This 50% Malbec and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon blend has aromas of red fruits, plums and fresh cherries. Malbec lends pleasant fruitiness to the wine while the Cabernet provides structure.  Fresh and crisp, Domaine Bousquet Rosé is great with a wide variety of spring fare. Try it with a goat cheese and local fiddlehead tartlet!

Züm Pinot Noir Rosé is a German rosé that is light and very dry. Hints of strawberry finish clean and crisp. This unique wine’s bright acidity pairs well with grilled fish and rich soft cheeses.

Two wines from California producer Manifesto are featured this month, and both boast a great savings! Manifesto Sauvignon Blanc has bold floral and citrus aromas with notes of spring blossoms, Ruby Red grapefruit, tangerines, and a hint of fresh cut herbs. Intriguing and complex flavors of honeydew melon, key lime, and creamy orange lead to a long, lingering finish filled with tropical fruit.

Manifesto Zinfandel starts with aromas of red currants, wild strawberry, and Asian spice, leading to full bodied flavors of red raspberry with hints of baking spice, candied citrus and forest floor. Try the Sauvignon Blanc with a fresh white fish or a salad with fennel. The Zinfandel pairs nicely with lighter firm cheeses, grilled sausages or tomato based sauces.

We are featuring a Spanish Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon this month. These two are great value wines that are setting themselves apart from their California and French compadres.

Valdivieso Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile is full bodied with rich, ripe fruit, sweet, soft tannins, and hints of oak that come across as well integrated and smooth. Mercedes Eguren Cabernet Sauvignon from Spain has more of a savory, herbal profile. Smoky cherry, tobacco, licorice, and mineral aromas lead to a juicy, bright palate. Gentle tannins give a nice grip to the dry finish.
