June's Health Genie

Dear Genie,
We have an outdoor wedding to attend in July (where we’ll be standing at the edge of a beautiful pond). My wife says she doesn’t want me to wear my favorite dark blue suit. She claims that I will attract mosquitoes and pledges not to sit next to me if I do. We choose not to use conventional bug sprays. If I take my chances and wear my favorite suit, do you have any suggestions on ‘natural’ bug sprays?
Thanks,
Got the Blues for Bugs

Dear Blues,
Unfortunately for you, it is true; mosquitoes use their vision to see the ‘forest through the trees’ meaning that they initially gravitate toward dark clothing and foliage. Chemicals in perspiration and water in general are also comfort zones for these bugs. This means that the beautiful pond you will be sitting near most likely will have mosquitoes enjoying the view with you.

Look for repellents that contain some of the volatile plant oils such as rosemary, cinnamon, cedar or peppermint. Citronella (Pelargonium citrosum) or citrosa plant was introduced into North America specifically as insect repellent. Often confused with Cymbopogen nardus (Ceylon citronella), this oil is actually the one most commonly found in natural repellents. Purported to be effective, it is a popular ingredient often found in candles used outdoors to repel mosquitoes and black flies.

You can actually create your own spray by mixing 1 part essential oil with 20 parts of a carrier product such as avocado oil or witch hazel. Use a dark spray bottle and store away from heat or light. Above all, keep in mind that you should test any essential oil on your skin to make sure you don’t get an allergic reaction.

Check in with your physician or friendly local Wellness department staff with more questions!

Fondly,
