Welcome to Serving Up Vermont! This blog is about, among other things, what happens when the shopping bag leaves the store. Ever wonder what the person putting the bright pink turnips into her shopping basket plans to do with them? Or why that shopper is choosing the yellow split peas from the Bulk section instead of the green ones? Or what in the world all those ingredients on the check-out ahead of you add up to? Well, in this behind-the-scenes look at my shopping bag, I offer recipes, tips, and stories about nourishing my family with local ingredients from City Market, with minimal cost - and hopefully without too much effort!
This blog is also about helping to support the kind of changes in the food system that allows more and more shopping bags to be filled with local food. And by this I mean not just the actual physical shopping bags leaving our store, but every place where people are accessing food in our city, from restaurants to home kitchens, from schools to after-school programs, from shelters to the Food Shelf. You will read about people trying to make a difference in supporting family farms, healthy food policies, and markets for local food, in the hope of creating better food security and nutrition and a sense of pride in our corner of the world for all.
Now back to the kitchen... What did I do with those turnips??
