Learn how grow an indoor salad garden with Peter Burke! This workshop will focus on growing a steady supply of fresh greens with only a cupboard and a windowsill.  Ready to harvest in just 7 to 10 days, grow greens that are both good for fresh salads and to cook in a stir fry!  Whether it is winter or you are living in an apartment, there is no reason to not to have a garden. Peter Burke will show you how to grow the bulk of your salad greens indoors, about 12-14 ounces a day!  Great for you locavores out there, there is nothing more local than your own windowsill.  The workshop will outline general techniques for many varieties of greens, and everyone goes home with their own planted tray to sample.

Food waste is a buzzword these days. From buying “ugly” fruits and vegetables to industrial composting, food waste has become both a household and large scale topic.  What policies already exist, or should exist, to help mitigate food waste? How are these policies helping or hurting individuals who are working to reduce food waste from field to plate?  And what can you do, as a consumer, to make sure you are making full use of the food you have?  Join us as we dive into these questions and gain insight from a panel of local experts for a lively discussion on food waste.

Brought to you by City Market and the Intervale Center with special thanks to ArtsRiot.

FREE! $5 suggested donation to benefit Intervale Center.

Doors open at 5:00pm. Cash bar.

This monthly series is a collaboration with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program.  For December we will come together and prepare a cozy “breakfast for dinner” of Ustipci, puffy and delicious Bosnian doughnuts which we will stuff with an assortment of sweet and savory fillings.  To accompany these popular doughnuts, we will brew Bosanska Kafa, an intense and flavorful Bosnian coffee.  Nada Popovac came to the United States from Sarajevo in 1998 with her husband and two daughters.  She has worked at the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program for 17 years.

It’s a fun class with lots of tasting and exploring. No baking skills are required to attend! This class is taught by Heike Meyer, the owner and found of Brotbakery (www.brotbakery.com), a small artisan bakery and education project, focusing on hand-made breads and pastries, traditional baking techniques, and baking with all-natural leavening.
